The Night

الليل

Meccan (surah 92 • 21 ayahs)

»The surah that opens with the oath of the Divine One swearing by the whelming of THE NIGHT that swathes the world in darkness. It is named after “the night” (al-layl), mentioned in verse 1. The surah shows the consequences of the paths people choose and emphasizing God’s guidance and warning.«

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH,

THE ALL-BENEFICENT, THE ALL-MERCIFUL.

القرآن:

والليل إذا يغشى

TRANSLATION:

By the night when it envelops,

2

القرآن:

والنهار إذا تجلى

TRANSLATION:

by the day when it brightens,

3

القرآن:

وما خلق الذكر والأنثى

TRANSLATION:

by Him who created the male and the female:

4

القرآن:

إن سعيكم لشتى

TRANSLATION:

your endeavours are indeed unlike.

القرآن:

فأما من أعطى واتقى

TRANSLATION:

As for him who gives and is Godwary

6

القرآن:

وصدق بالحسنى

TRANSLATION:

and confirms the best promise,

القرآن:

فسنيسره لليسرى

TRANSLATION:

We shall surely ease him into facility.

القرآن:

وأما من بخل واستغنى

TRANSLATION:

But as for him who is stingy

and self-complacent,

9

القرآن:

وكذب بالحسنى

TRANSLATION:

and denies the best promise,

10

القرآن:

فسنيسره للعسرى

TRANSLATION:

We shall surely ease him into hardship.

11

القرآن:

وما يغني عنه ماله إذا تردى

TRANSLATION:

His wealth shall not avail him when he perishes.

القرآن:

إن علينا للهدى

TRANSLATION:

Indeed with Us rests guidance,

13

القرآن:

وإن لنا للآخرة والأولى

TRANSLATION:

and indeed to Us belong the world and the Hereafter.

القرآن:

فأنذرتكم نارا تلظى

TRANSLATION:

So I warn you of a blazing fire,

القرآن:

لا يصلاها إلا الأشقى

TRANSLATION:

which none shall enter except the most wretched

القرآن:

الذي كذب وتولى

TRANSLATION:

—he who denies and turns back.

القرآن:

وسيجنبها الأتقى

TRANSLATION:

The Godwary shall be spared it

18

القرآن:

الذي يؤتي ماله يتزكى

TRANSLATION:

—he who gives his wealth to purify himself

19

القرآن:

وما لأحد عنده من نعمة تجزى

TRANSLATION:

and does not expect any reward from anyone,

20

القرآن:

إلا ابتغاء وجه ربه الأعلى

TRANSLATION:

but seeks only the pleasure of his Lord,

the Most Exalted,

21

القرآن:

ولسوف يرضى

TRANSLATION:

and, surely, soon he will be well-pleased.
