AL-NŪR

The Light

النور

Medinan (surah 24 • 64 ayahs)

»The surah that contains the inimitable verse that celebrates God as THE LIGHT of the heavens and earth, guiding to Himself whomever He so wills. It is named after the “Light Verse” which occurs at verse 35, where God’s light is contrasted to the darkness in which the disbelievers find themselves engulfed. The surah clarifies several regulations for the Muslim community, mainly to do with marriage, modesty, obedience to the Prophet, and appropriate behaviour in the household.«

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH,

THE ALL-BENEFICENT, THE ALL-MERCIFUL.

Or, ‘Vicious words (or deeds) come from vicious persons, and vicious persons are worthy of vicious words (or deeds). Good words (or deeds) come from good people, and good people are worthy of good words (or deeds).’ According to this interpretation, this verse is similar in meaning to 17:84. This interpretation is also supported by the last part of the verse: ‘They are absolved of what they say [about them].’ However in accordance with the translation given above, the meaning of the verse will be similar to verse 24:3, at the beginning of this sūrah.

TRANSLATION:

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His Light is a niche wherein is a lamp —the lamp is in a glass, the glass as it were a glittering star— lit from a blessed olive tree, neither eastern nor western, whose oil almost lights up, though fire should not touch it.
