AL-TAḤRĪM

The Forbidding

التحريم

Medinan (surah 66 • 12 ayahs)

»The surah that opens with admonishing the Prophet against THE FORBIDDING or prohibition of something he once imposed on himself for the purpose of not offending his wives, though God had made it lawful for him. Named after the phrase “why do you forbid” (li mā tuḥrimu) in verse 1. It mentions two of the Prophet’s wives, namely Ḥafṣah and ʿĀyishah, for an incident when a confidence was betrayed (verse 3 ff.) and urges all believers to submit themselves to God and to guard themselves and their families against Hellfire (verse 6). The surah closes by giving examples of believing and disbelieving women (verse 10 ff.).«

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH,

THE ALL-BENEFICENT, THE ALL-MERCIFUL.

1

القرآن:

يا أيها النبي لم تحرم ما أحل الله لك ۖ تبتغي مرضات أزواجك ۚ والله غفور رحيم

TRANSLATION:

O Prophet! Why do you prohibit [yourself]

what Allah has made lawful for you,

seeking to please your wives?

And Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

2

القرآن:

قد فرض الله لكم تحلة أيمانكم ۚ والله مولاكم ۖ وهو العليم الحكيم

TRANSLATION:

Allah has certainly made lawful for you

the dissolution of your oaths,1

and Allah is your master

and He is the All-knowing, the All-wise.

وإذ أسر النبي إلى بعض أزواجه حديثا فلما نبأت به وأظهره الله عليه عرف بعضه وأعرض عن بعض ۖ فلما نبأها به قالت من أنبأك هذا ۖ قال نبأني العليم الخبير

TRANSLATION:

When the Prophet confided to one of his wives

a matter,

but when she divulged it,

and Allah apprised him about it,

he announced [to her] part of it

and disregarded part of it.

So when he told her about it,

she said, ‘Who informed you about it?’

He said,

‘The All-knowing and the All-aware informed me.’

4

القرآن:

إن تتوبا إلى الله فقد صغت قلوبكما ۖ وإن تظاهرا عليه فإن الله هو مولاه وجبريل وصالح المؤمنين ۖ والملائكة بعد ذلك ظهير

TRANSLATION:

If the two of you1 repent to Allah …2

for your hearts have certainly swerved,

and if you back each other against him,

then [know that] Allah is indeed his guardian,

and Gabriel, the righteous among the faithful,

and, thereafter, the angels are his supporters.

That is, Ḥafṣah and ʿĀyishah, two of the Prophet’s wives.

Ellipsis. The omitted phrase is, ‘it will be better for you.’

5

القرآن:

عسى ربه إن طلقكن أن يبدله أزواجا خيرا منكن مسلمات مؤمنات قانتات تائبات عابدات سائحات ثيبات وأبكارا

TRANSLATION:

It may be that if he divorces you

his Lord will give him, in [your] stead, wives

better than you:

[such as are] muslim, faithful, obedient,

penitent, devout and given to fasting,

virgins and non-virgins.

6

القرآن:

يا أيها الذين آمنوا قوا أنفسكم وأهليكم نارا وقودها الناس والحجارة عليها ملائكة غلاظ شداد لا يعصون الله ما أمرهم ويفعلون ما يؤمرون

TRANSLATION:

O you who have faith!

Save yourselves and your families from a Fire

whose fuel is people and stones,

over which are [assigned] angels, severe and mighty,

who do not disobey

whatever Allah has commanded them,

and carry out what they are commanded.

7

TRANSLATION:

O you who have faith!

Repent to Allah with sincere repentance!

Maybe your Lord

will absolve you of your misdeeds

and admit you into gardens

with streams running in them,

on the day

when Allah will not let the Prophet down

and the faithful who are with him.

Their light will move swiftly before them

and on their right.

They will say, ‘Our Lord!

Perfect our light for us, and forgive us!

Indeed You have power over all things.’

TRANSLATION:

Allah draws an example for the faithless:

the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot.

They were

under two of our righteous servants,

yet they betrayed them.

So they1 did not avail them2 in any way against Allah,

and it was said [to them],

‘Enter the Fire, along with those who enter [it].’

That is, Noah and Lot.

That is, the wives.

and deliver me from the wrongdoing lot.’
