The Winding Up

Meccan (surah 81 • 29 ayahs)

»The surah that opens with a riveting description of THE WINDING UP of the sun at the end of earthly life and the dawn of eternity. It takes its name from “the winding up”, “the enfolding” or “the darkening” (takwīr) of the sun as mentioned in verse 1. The surah stress the fact that people will be confronted by their deeds on Judgement Day, asserting the truth of the Quran, and calling people to the right path. It opens with a powerful description of events on that Day.«

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH,

THE ALL-BENEFICENT, THE ALL-MERCIFUL.

القرآن:

إذا الشمس كورت

TRANSLATION:

When the sun is wound up,1

Or ‘turns dark.’

القرآن:

وإذا النجوم انكدرت

TRANSLATION:

when the stars scatter,1

Or ‘fall down.’

القرآن:

وإذا الجبال سيرت

TRANSLATION:

when the mountains are set moving,

القرآن:

وإذا العشار عطلت

TRANSLATION:

when the pregnant camels are neglected,

القرآن:

وإذا الوحوش حشرت

TRANSLATION:

when the wild beasts are mustered,

القرآن:

وإذا البحار سجرت

TRANSLATION:

when the seas are set afire,

القرآن:

وإذا النفوس زوجت

TRANSLATION:

when the souls are assorted,1

That is, separated into different groups according to their character; cf. 56:7; 37:22. Or ‘mated;’ cf. 52:20.

القرآن:

وإذا الموءودة سئلت

TRANSLATION:

when the girl buried-alive will be asked

القرآن:

بأي ذنب قتلت

TRANSLATION:

for what sin she was killed.

القرآن:

وإذا الصحف نشرت

TRANSLATION:

When the records [of deeds] are unfolded,

القرآن:

وإذا السماء كشطت

TRANSLATION:

when the sky is stripped off,

القرآن:

وإذا الجحيم سعرت

TRANSLATION:

when hell is set ablaze,

القرآن:

وإذا الجنة أزلفت

TRANSLATION:

when paradise is brought near,

14

القرآن:

علمت نفس ما أحضرت

TRANSLATION:

then a soul shall know what it has readied [for itself].

القرآن:

فلا أقسم بالخنس

TRANSLATION:

So I swear by the stars that return,

القرآن:

الجوار الكنس

TRANSLATION:

the planets that hide,

17

القرآن:

والليل إذا عسعس

TRANSLATION:

by the night as it approaches,

18

القرآن:

والصبح إذا تنفس

TRANSLATION:

by the dawn as it breathes,

القرآن:

إنه لقول رسول كريم

TRANSLATION:

it is indeed the speech of a noble apostle,1

القرآن:

ذي قوة عند ذي العرش مكين

TRANSLATION:

powerful and eminent with the Lord of the Throne,

القرآن:

مطاع ثم أمين

TRANSLATION:

one who is heard and trustworthy as well.

22

القرآن:

وما صاحبكم بمجنون

TRANSLATION:

Your companion is not crazy:

23

القرآن:

ولقد رآه بالأفق المبين

TRANSLATION:

certainly he saw him on the manifest horizon,

24

القرآن:

وما هو على الغيب بضنين

TRANSLATION:

and he is not miserly concerning the Unseen.

القرآن:

وما هو بقول شيطان رجيم

TRANSLATION:

And it is not the speech of an outcast Satan.

القرآن:

فأين تذهبون

TRANSLATION:

So where are you going?

27

القرآن:

إن هو إلا ذكر للعالمين

TRANSLATION:

It is just a reminder for all the nations,

28

القرآن:

لمن شاء منكم أن يستقيم

TRANSLATION:

for those of you who wish to be steadfast;1

Or ‘for those of you who wish to walk straight.’

29

القرآن:

وما تشاءون إلا أن يشاء الله رب العالمين

TRANSLATION:

but you do not wish

unless it is wished by Allah,

the Lord of all the worlds.
